USA: A teacher accused of having sex with two students does not refute the charges

The teacher, who was fired and is currently on bail, could be sentenced to 5 years in prison. Laura Ramos, a 32-year-old special education ex-teacher who in 2017 was charged with sexual assault in the second degree for having sex with two of her students, as well as for violating a protection order, has not refuted the accusations on Monday in the Superior Court of Connecticut (USA), inform local media. "Do you think the State has enough evidence to expose you to the risk of being convicted?" Judge Robert Devlin asked Ramos, who responded with a brief "probably." In June of last year the woman denied the accusations against her. However, the defendant later admitted having had sex with the 18-year-old boy in his car "a handful of times" between December 2016 and April 2017. A police report revealed that the school where Ramos worked contacted the authorities after a teacher learned, through a student, that the teacher, allegedly, was having sex with...

White House authorizes border troops to use lethal force

Imagen
The White House has reportedly issued a memo authorizing troops stationed at the Mexican border to engage in law enforcement duties and use lethal force against illegal immigrants if necessary. At present, just under 6,000 active-duty troops are stationed at key locations along the US’ 200-mile border with Mexico. The troops were deployed to the border by President Trump as multiple ‘caravans’ of Central American migrants made their way toward the US border via Mexico. Rather than meeting the migrants with weapons drawn, the troops had been tasked with bolstering the presence of the Customs and Border Protection and National Guard personnel already at the border. Their  duties  include constructing barriers, and providing reconnaissance and logistics support to the CBP agents. Now, Military Times  reports  that the White House signed a memo late Tuesday authorizing the troops to  “perform those military protective activities that the Secretary of Defe...

Trump to snub Macron-favored Paris Peace Forum

Unlike many other world leaders, US President Donald Trump will not attend a conference hosted by France’s Emmanuel Macron, the organizers said today. The Paris Peace Forum coincides with France’s program for the commemoration of the end of World War I taking place this week. Around 70 world leaders are to visit France for the event, including Trump. But unlike people including Germany’s Angela Merkel, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the US president will not attend the forum, which is touted as a new annual event aiming to “develop solutions for today's transborder challenges.” As the opening date was drawing closer, there was a lot of uncertainty about Trump’s participation. But on Thursday chief organizer Justin Vaisse confirmed to AFP that the American leader will not be part of it. Earlier this week Vaisse tried to downplay the importance of Trump’s presence. The forum was given impetus by Macron as part of his agenda to keep France clo...

I should feel safer, but the president’s anti-immigrant rhetoric doesn’t help

My best friends and I try to camp on a Northern California river every summer, in the hopes it becomes tradition. We have done it three of the past four years. This year, because the Russian River was low, we went westward from our usual spot. On our way, we drove past a house with a Confederate flag flying over it. My friends are white; I am not.
